I chase after him. “How did you open the portal? We don’t need to be here. Send us back where we belong. You can stay here if you want.”

“Alas, I am not entirely sure how it worked,” says the ghost.

Grr. Either this guy is blowing me off or he’s an idiot.

It’s tempting to drain his energy again. Psychic vampires consume psychic energy. Ghosts are basically all psychic energy. No physical biology involved. I have not yet tried to completely devour a spirit, but this guy is trying my patience. He casually stranded us here in his quest to find the Lost City of Gold. Whether or not he cares about going home, I do.

So much for the ‘lost’ city. It was never lost. They simply weren’t looking in the right dimension.

I chase Walter for a few minutes, pestering and arguing in an entirely one-sided conversation. Allison, Tammy, and Paxton keep up with me as best they can. Ashton’s fallen way behind, but he’s coming after us—the ruckus of him crashing through the foliage is getting closer.

Walter comes to an abrupt stop at a break in the rainforest.

As annoyed as I am with him, the spectacle before us is so grandiose, it leaves me speechless. We’re standing at the edge of the rainforest, where it borders a modestly large area of farmland. On the other side of the crops stands a large, gleaming ziggurat. It, too, appears to be made of gold. I feel like a tiny field mouse staring at a model pyramid made from a stack of gold bullion bricks. I can’t believe that building is entirely made of gold. That has to be plating on stone. Still, even if it’s only plating… damn impressive.

Beyond the golden ziggurat, more gold structures poke out of the foliage here and there. Not every structure is entirely coated in gold. Many are only decorated with gold inlay or gold statuettes. The closest ziggurat and two other more distant buildings got the full treatment, however. Those structures must have some sort of significance to them. Temples, palaces, or some such thing.

Tammy, Paxton, and Allison catch up to me.

Walter floats there, staring at the city in front of us. A glint in his eyes makes him look like a little boy about to hurl himself with wild abandon into Disneyland. Unfortunately, if he does that, it may be hours or days before I can get him to help us figure out how to get back to the normal world. I can’t eat him or we might be stuck here for good. I can’t grab him because he’s a ghost.

“Holy shit,” rasps Tammy. “Oops. Sorry.”

“You’re eighteen now, Tam.” Paxton pats her on the arm. “You can say that. Considering that’s a giant golden ziggurat, I think it’s worth at least one cuss word.”

Walter mutters to himself about what manner of grand treasures must be waiting for him in that city.

“Bit late, dude.” Tammy shakes her head. “Even if you could somehow pillage the place of its wealth by yourself, you’re a ghost.
